Paul Hayashi

Paul N. Hayashi, MSgt. USAF, Retired
July 11, 1947 – December 27, 2022

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. Paul was born in Tokyo, Japan as a U.S. citizen in 1947. He spent most of his youth in Seattle, WA, where he graduated from Rainier Beach High School. Following high school, he attended the University of Washington and later enlisted in the Air Force. 

While in the Air Force, he served as a photojournalist and was stationed in Japan, Thailand, and various bases in the United States, including the Pentagon. Following his retirement as a Master Sergeant, he earned an Associate’s Degree from Syracuse University and taught photojournalism at a Regional Occupational Program in Redlands, CA. He also started a successful commercial photography business. “He lived with his camera!” 

He was married to his wife, Ella, for forty-five years. They resided in Redlands, Calimesa, and Yucaipa, where they raised two children, Hannah, and James, and two grandchildren, Austin and Chaim. 

Paul over the years had many pets that he loved and took care of from a mouse, hamsters, pigeons, chickens, dogs, and cats.  He was a person of integrity who was well-liked and respected by others. He will be missed.

Memorial Viewing -Jan 10, 9:30-10:30 at Emerson-Bartlett Memorial Chapel, 703 Brookside Ave, Redlands, CA 92373. The Graveside Service is Jan 10, 11:00-12:00 at Hillside Memorial Park, 1540 Alessandro Road, Redlands, CA 92373.

There will be no live stream of the funeral.

  1. My prayers and condolences for Ella and Paul’s family members. 🙏. It is so hard to hear of another AAVS,. COMCAM family member passing.
    Paul was one of the Air Force, ‘s most creative still Photojournalists, always passionate about his photography. His use of unique flash photography techniques ,and portraiture accentuated his photos!
    He was a true mentor for many young Air Force photographers.

    A very personable friend to many . He will be missed!

  2. I had the distinct pleasure of working alongside Paul while at HQ AAVS. He was one of best Senior NCOs. He took me under his wing and I never will forget the kindness he showed me that has lasted my lifetime. I pray for Ella and for his entire family at this most difficult of times. Know this, when you eventually end up at the pearly gates, Paul will certainly be there to document your arrival. Momento Decreto my fellow PJ.
