San Bernardino marks 25 years since closing of Norton Air Force Base, eyes future

Past investments to support air cargo activity at San Bernardino International Airport started paying off in earnest three years ago.

Like many in San Bernardino, Michael Burrows has an emotional connection to the former Norton Air Force Base.

It was there, in the eastern part of town, where his father, a civil engineer, was stationed in the 1960s. Inside a chapel there where his parents wed that same decade. A north San Bernardino kid and Cajon High graduate, Burrows cut his teeth there in the late 1990s, following the closure of the base, writing grants to help acquire funding for infrastructure improvements.
